Environmental Advisor
Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited (SMLC) is seeking an Environmental Advisor.
Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Environmental Advisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, and company standards. The role monitors environmental performance, supports pollution prevention initiatives, and promotes sustainable practices to protect the environment and public health.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and schedule all environmental monitoring programmes, including water quality, biodiversity, noise, and vibration monitoring, in a timely and cost-effective manner while identifying the resources required.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of the Environmental Management System.
- Manage and monitor environmental compliance in accordance with the Environmental Obligations Register.
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for all monitoring programs and develop manuals for each program.
- Develop, implement and monitor rehabilitation programs on site to ensure maximum rehabilitation during the LOM.
- Co-ordinate and assist with baseline surveys, and longer-term monitoring, of all environmental monitoring programs.
- Monitor and eradicate feral animals, vermin and weeds.
- Manage “Permit to clear” and “Disturbed land” registers, follow up cleared & rehab areas, topsoil collection and storage
- Update fauna register – records animal sightings, road kills, feral animals control
- Provide professional and technical support to employees and contractors to ensure that operating practices comply with the best environmental practice
- Promotes the professional development of environmental staff members and company –wide awareness of environmental issues and requirements by providing guidance and training
- Organise, co-ordinate and support consultants who are working on site
- Participates in the department’s annual budget preparation.
- Develop, implement and maintain waste management program including hazardous waste, recycling strategies, reduction strategies, offsite disposal and on-site disposal initiatives
- Train site personnel on appropriate waste handling and disposal methods to support the site-wide waste management programme.
- Identification of all waste streams on site and supervise daily collection
- Ensure waste segregation is done, and wastes are placed in the right bins
- Undertaking environmental inspections on all mining areas
- Maintain the environmental legal register and all permits, licenses and registrations required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in environmental science or environmental engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in environmental management,
- Knowledge on ISO 14001 EMS implementation process
- Computer skills in: Environmental Management Software’s or similar; MS Office Software package and Acquire Database Software package.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as officers
- Demonstrated knowledge of Tanzanian and International Regulatory Framework for environmental management in general.
- Limited knowledge of HSE regulations
- Audit/EMS management systems
Where You’ll Be Working
Nyanzaga Gold Project is Perseus’s first planned operation in Tanzania, located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields. A Final Investment Decision was made in April 2025, with first gold production targeted for early 2027.
The project places strong emphasis on sustainability and local development, with programs dedicated to employment, skills training, infrastructure, and long-term social outcomes. Once operational, Nyanzaga is expected to become a key contributor to Perseus’s future growth and a flagship project in East Africa.
