Ivory CoastIvory Coast is one of Africa’s best developed countries, with good infrastructure and a sophisticated bureaucracy. Ivory Coast’s agricultural industry dominates over mining, even though it has the largest share of greenstone belts prospective for gold in West Africa. In 2008 Lihir’s Bonikro mine became the first significant gold producer for the under-explored country. Randgold’s 4.3Moz Tongon project in northern Ivory Coast is expected to commence production in 2010 at the rate of about 290,000oz of gold per annum.
The discoveries in Mali and northern Ivory Coast are significant for the relative ease with which the deposits have been discovered, their large size, grade, and mine profitability. The discovery and early production successes at Morila sparked the current Malian gold exploration rush. Our tenement holding in northern Ivory Coast stands at 2,724sq km, with the main area of focus being the Tengrela Gold Project. In addition to Tengrela, we are working on the Mahale and Mbengue licences in Ivory Coast.
